The 5 Reiki Precepts: Gratitude Focus
Reiki is a Japanese form of energy healing that unblocks and balances energy to promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
It is based on a set of precepts, or principles, that help guide the energy, and boost your sense of well-being.
The precepts are like affirmations or intentions that are used to bring awareness to the present while connecting with the Reiki energy. This promotes the Reiki healing and balancing your energy during a session and beyond.
Mikao Usui, or Usui Sensei (Teacher Usui) founded Reiki in 1922 and stated the original Reiki ideals in a writing as:
“The secret art of inviting happiness
The miraculous medicine of all diseases
Just for today do not be angry
Do not worry and be filled with gratitude
Devote yourself to your work and be kind to people
Every morning and evening join your hands in prayer
pray these words to your heart
and chant these words with your mouth”
The five precepts within this writing are:
- Just for today, I will not get angry.
- Just for today, I will not worry.
- Just for today, I will be grateful.
- Just for today, I will work hard.
- Just for today, I will be kind to others.
Though it is important to understand the history and lineage of Reiki and the precepts, I believe that each person must make meaning for themselves to fully integrate understanding and deliver the results of energy healing.
With that said, the way I invoke the precepts continues to evolve. I am influenced by the energy of my clients, which shifts how I invoke the precepts during sessions, but they always echo the sentiments of the founding ideals and sound something like this:
Just for today…
I am at peace.
I am content.
I am grateful.
I bring joy to everything that I do.
I am kind.
Since we are kicking off a four-week focus on Growing Gratitude, it is important to note that gratitude is one of the precepts of Reiki.
The Reiki precept of gratitude reminds you to express gratitude for all that you have.
Oprah Winfrey once said, “The single greatest thing you can do to change your life today would be to start being grateful for what you have right now.”
By slowing down and grounding yourself in the good that surrounds your life, you foster more positive energy and release energy that is dragging you down.
This happens because gratitude is consistently associated with greater happiness as it helps you:
- Feel more positive emotions
- Relish the good experiences
- Improve your health
- Deal with adversity
- Build stronger relationships
You don’t have to be Reiki attuned or a practitioner to begin receiving the benefits of affirming the Reiki precepts in your life.
Take this as an invitation to begin each day in the small way of saying – “Just for today, I will be grateful.”
