What is Reiki?
In the most basic description, Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that promotes healing.
From being virtually unknown a few years ago, Reiki is growing as an energy healing practice and is recognized as a natural and safe method of promoting stress reduction and relaxation.
Reiki is a holistic form of energy healing that works on the mind, body, and spirit, at the same time, to strengthen the body’s own healing ability and rebalance its energy. Reiki can be categorized with other energy movement techniques such as acupuncture, Qi Gong, and Tai Chi.
While Reiki is spiritual in nature as it provides love and compassion to the client, it is not a religion. It has no dogma and does not conflict with religious belief. People who are followers of all the various religions practice Reiki and find that it enhances their religious experience.
People find that Reiki can be used on its own or as a complementary therapy, supporting and enhancing conventional practices of medical or psychological care. Reiki does not take the place of medical care, but is a wonderful tool to support healing.
As the practice of Reiki continues to grow, it is being researched and utilized at many progressive health care facilities, such as the Mayo Clinic. In fact, over 800 hospitals across the United States offer Reiki as part of regular patient care because it decreases recovery time from surgery, improves mental attitude, and reduces unwanted side effects of medications including chemotherapy, radiation, and other medical procedures.
A research study at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut in 2000, found that Reiki improved patient sleep by 86 percent, reduced pain by 78 percent, reduced nausea by 80 percent, and reduced anxiety during pregnancy by 94 percent.
